myHistro Timeline

There are quite a few interactive timeline apps on the market, functioning both on web browsers and as apps on mobile devices. myHistro exists as both. It also functions well in the Edmodo app store. myHistro works as a timeline generator, incorporating text, pictures, video, and maps. Users can customize dates and times. Users can embed finished timelines into blogs and websites. Ways users could use myHistro is to create timelines of characters in a book or the adventures of an explorer. This year I plan on having students create timelines of their year, constantly revisiting their work and adding… Read more »

How to

For the first Make Cycle of CLMOOC 2014, we are exploring the wonderful world of How To guides. How Tos are everywhere and available for all kinds of topics.  We even found a How to Write a How to Guide! We also welcome remixes to the How To format.  This  week’s co-facilitators, Chris Butts and Rachel Bear, made a How To be them as a form of introduction. For this first Make Cycle, we focus our thinking and reflection around the ways in which How To Guides can be used to share who we are and what things we are… Read more »

Make an Animated You – Cycle 1 (2013) Featured Make

Using an app called Animation Desk (but other animation tools will work), create an animated visual of yourself as part of an introductory activity. Think about how you might not just represent yourself, but also, how you will represent elements of your life or interests or personality in a visual way. How will the movement of your animation relate to the story you are trying to tell?

My 10-Book Memoir

Use Mozilla’s Webmaker remix tool Thimble to create your own version of a 10-Book Memoir web page. Gather the last 10 books you read (or games you played or tags from flowers you planted) or the last 10 things you hacked or made. Take a picture and share it online so you can grab its URL (or web address). Then visit the 10-Book Memoir template at https://thimble.webmaker.org/p/lazp/. Change the picture and quotes, as well as anything else about the page you want to mess around with while you’re there. Hit publish to see your new version of the page without… Read more »

Using Canva to Introduce Anything

Canva is a tool for creating graphics of all kind: pinterest-style, social media graphs, posters, presentation slides, twitter headers, facebook covers… I am using it to help promote #clmooc, to introduce it in an image friendly way. You can easily imagine many ways to introduce yourself and others with Canva. I wish it was open source, but it isn’t. As for instructions? Well…it is sign up and follow your nose letting any purpose be your guide. It is easy to play on the site and easier still to share what you make. In an era of copyright madness, it is… Read more »

Graphical Introduction

Use a tool like Vizify to create a “graphical bio” for yourself (as a means of introducing yourself to the community) or for a character (as a means of transformative visualization and analysis). Think about focused bios, as well. Perhaps you can use this make to chart your summer touring with the band or traveling to see the world. Other tools or ways you might do this are shown in the examples below.

Make your Avatar as an introduction in #clmooc

Everyone now has an opportunity to make an avatar. Making an avatar is a fun way of introduction for new students and teachers. And for participants in a Mooc. I would like you all to make an avatar (please do a search on Internet to learn more about avatars and how to make them) You could paint, use textile or any material (and make a photo of it), or use a computer program. You are encouraged to support and to help each other. It will help us if you could write a text on the process of making and /… Read more »

Where I’m From poem

This is the first homework assignment in my multimedia class. It introduces me to the students and gets them quickly into the kind of work they’ll do for their first project. I love the way it marries creative writing and technology. Write a poem in the style of George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From”. Record the poem. Optionally, add a music soundtrack. Post your recording on SoundCloud. Optionally, add an image to the SoundCloud post. Share the SoundCloud posting. For details, resources and an example, click the “Adapted from” link. Create a #CLMOOC Profile (Thimble version)

Okay – here goes another coding “make-with-me” for the end of Make Cycle 1. Thimble is kind of wonky right now as it updates, so bear with me. You can preview this project – a #CLMOOC Profile – here: https://googledrive.com/host/0BxZk3rymm2ylbEpYTUVZVGJBaVU/profile.htm You can find the code for it, along with instructions on how to change the code, here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pvyMJlbikLBZgGGv4L_Ki_blDhM7R6OfhZxsU2a-iog/edit?usp=sharing If you want to mess with the code now, you can. You can save your work and paste it into Thimble when Thimble is ready. I will put the template into Thimble ASAP. You are a coder and you are okay 😉

Create a #CLMOOC Profile (non-Thimble version)

Follow embedded comments to learn some basic HTML and remix a profile template to let the #clmooc community know all about you. Along with the code, you can find directions for remixing the code and sharing your webpage on Google Drive. Follow the “Adapted from” link below to get started.
