Hacking a Classic Arcade Game

In correlation with the “toy hacking,” video game hacking can begin with some classic arcade games as “mentor texts” that one can build upon. A nice element of the classics is that design and play are relatively simple, due no doubt to the constraints of technology of the time. Revisit some of the old arcade games — http://www.classicgamesarcade.com/ — and find a favorite. Next, either build a board game version of the video game, or use a video game design site like Gamestar Mechanic – http://gamestarmechanic.com/ – to build your own version of a classic arcade game. Consider ways you… Read more »

Make your own pop-up book

For my #toyback, I decided to hack a book. Specifically, I took a conventional children’s book and made it into a pop-up book. Here were some resources I found useful: Pop-up mechanisms – part 1 and part 2 http://www.ehow.com/how_4702538_make-own-popup-books.html http://www.inhabitots.com/make-your-diy-book-projects-pop/ http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pop-up-Book Not being artistic, I made color copies of illustrations in the book and used those to make the pop-up cutouts. I pasted the copies onto cardboard and then did the cutouts as per the first two links above. And here’s the vine version: (I am a huge fan of handwritten letters and cards. Guess what kind of card everyone’s… Read more »

Stop Motion video

A number of us in clmooc are doing stop motion videos, and others are interested in trying. Why not try yourself? Some have done it with the toy hack, but it could be done with anything and for any purpose. Here’s a nice blog post that gives a few useful resources on making stop motion video:http://dogtrax.edublogs.org/2013/06/24/webmaker-making-stopmotion-movies/#.UcgdppzWcPg.twitter One easy way to make a stop motion video is to take a series of still photos and then put them together in a movie making program like iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. Or here are a few apps for doing it: Jellycam: http://www.ticklypictures.com/shop/jellycam/… Read more »

Alexander Calder-inspired #toyhack sculpture

Inspired by the work of American sculptor Alexander Calder (who has been credited as the originator of the “mobile” as a type of kinetic sculpture) my two boys and I embraced the second #toyhack make-cycle as a team. We worked on our Calder-inspired sculpture project together from beginning to end. First, I turned to the internet to introduce them to Alexander Calder and show them all kinds of examples of Calder’s work, focusing particularly on his mobiles. From there we were all charged up and jumped right into our own creative collaboration. We scoured their bedroom for old discarded toy… Read more »
