Grab a few unused toys from around the house and tools you can use to take them apart. Feel free to gather your favorite crafting supplies, as well. Disassemble the toys and reassemble them in a new way (with added craft supplies), perhaps to make a visual pun. Share out your work on your favorite social network. If you love this, try to start a chain of toy hacks, remixes of your work, or even a kitchen-table or virtual toy hacking workshop with friends. If you’d like to take this idea further, try it with electronic or mechanical toys and try to “circuit-bend” or otherwise change the toys to do new things.

2 Examples Completed for this Make

  1. Pop-up book
       submitted by Karen Fasimpaur

For my #toyback, I decided to hack a book. Specifically, I took a conventional children’s book and made it into a pop-up book.

  2. Exploring Senses CIC
       submitted by David Allistone

Yes, a smashing idea, Exploring Senses CIC have been facilitating mass participation ‘CommuniToy’ toy hacking events since October 2011. Toy hacking is so much fun, participants normally play around for 2-3hrs. At Big Bang Science Fair at London Excel 600+ young people participated in one day!!: ) Check out the pics on our blog, join us on Twitter and facebo0k to find out about our events; often free: )
