Turn Text into Music

Did you ever wonder what a poem sounds like? This Make idea is all about taking text (your own, or maybe someone else’s) and turning those words into music. The P22 Music Text Composition Converter does the hard work for you, but you still have some choices — instrument voice, beats per minute, etc. How might you take this text-music idea a step further? Why not use the text-music download (it is a MIDI file, so you might have to do more conversion to MP3 via a site like Zamzar) as a soundtrack to something that goes deeper with the text?… Read more »

Making a Political Statement

A Google image search on terms like “political memes” or “election memes” provides a reading experience markedly different than opening the morning paper. This instant, biased collage of pictures is the most complex of digital footprints, still new to even the most web literate among us. Political memes show participatory culture’s take on political news and the evolving process of electing a president. According to Merriam Webster, a “meme” is “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture” Often these are images or videos that are overlayed with interpretive text and are spread… Read more »

Make a postcard

Make a postcard! This idea was inspired by CLMOOC, Sarah Honeychurch’s gifting project, this postcard thing, this one, and my love of writing letters. From all this, a group of us decided to a project to send each other handmade postcards. You can sign up to be a part of it here. There are no “rules.” You can send as many or as few as you like to whoever you like whenever you like. The topics are up to you. Here’s a lovely post that Kevin wrote about this project.

Geolocate your space – 2015 Make Cycle #6

In this make that was a part of CLMOOC 2015, we invite you to get out of the house. That’s right. Power down that laptop, grab your sneakers or walking shoes, and head on out into the Great Outdoors and continue to explore the public spaces that surround you. You may need to bring a camera or mobile device with you, so we acknowledge that you might not be completely technologically untethered. This make is designed to encourage you to head outside to your local park, or greenway, or bike path, or museum, or library, or street corner, or wherever… Read more »

Art to Writing: Making Connections

This make affords students the opportunity to think outside “doing school” and access the creative sides of the brain while still engaging in critical thinking, reflection, and processing abstract concepts. The example here is for Eastern Philosophy, but it is readily adaptable. The central make is an Altered Book, taking a book destined for the trash heap and remixing it to become an art piece connected to a literary question. There are a number of sites and videos for instruction on the techniques used. The key element in this make is to use the artistic process to consider the literature… Read more »

All systems go! – 2015 Make Cycle #4

According to the dictionary, a system is “a group of interacting, interrelated, interdependent elements forming a complex whole.” There are many types of systems: human, behavioral, natural, technological, mechanical, mathematical, political, social, financial, transit, etc. In this make, we invite you to document, analyze and reflect on the variety of systems that influence your life personally and/or professionally. Use your creativity to document an existing system, access your ingenuity to improve an existing system or use your imagination to develop a unique new system and design a novel way to explain it. How can you document a system that serves… Read more »

Off on a Blog Walk

Good luck surfing the flow! But hey, maybe you need to slow down a bit and go off on a Blog Walk. A Blog Walk is engaging in some “slow reading” of blogs within a community, such as the CLMOOC Blog Hub. It’s also more than just reading. It’s about engaging with other writers, by commenting or maybe writing your own blog post in reply to the blogs you have read. A powerful variation to the Blog Walk is to pull out quotes and interesting ideas, and reflect on the meaning of those words. A good Blog Walk will engage… Read more »
