Coloring Book Together

Conceived as a multi-part project, the CL Coloring Book offers the opportunity for participants to create all sorts of outline designs as pages which can be colored by others. During the project cycle, individual pages can be shared back and forth with others in CLMOOC (version 2017) and beyond. Along the way, we hope a bunch of design tools will be explored and explained to everybody. For example, Algot Runeman, that’s me, will use Inkscape as the design tool. Others may design with just a pencil on paper. Still others might know about a cool online tool. By exploring and… Read more »

Make your own pop-up book

For my #toyback, I decided to hack a book. Specifically, I took a conventional children’s book and made it into a pop-up book. Here were some resources I found useful: Pop-up mechanisms – part 1 and part 2 http://www.ehow.com/how_4702538_make-own-popup-books.html http://www.inhabitots.com/make-your-diy-book-projects-pop/ http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Pop-up-Book Not being artistic, I made color copies of illustrations in the book and used those to make the pop-up cutouts. I pasted the copies onto cardboard and then did the cutouts as per the first two links above. And here’s the vine version: (I am a huge fan of handwritten letters and cards. Guess what kind of card everyone’s… Read more »

Make Cycle 2 (2013) Reinventing Books

My daughter and I love books. She had a large number of books as a child and she still has some of them in her collection. We decided to take several of the books and cards on colors, friends, and numbers and put them together and make one book. In the process we deconstructed materials no longer used and had a great time reconfiguring them into a work of art. This is the video we made using Animoto: http://animoto.com/play/X2nqke8z2IsQnwyXaxNZkA

Make a zine

A “zine” is an inexpensively made publication that is then distributed to a small group of people. It is often black and white and reproduced on a copy machine. At Borderlands Writing Project, we are producing a zine about our memories of childhood reading. Each of is going to produce one page. Below is my page. I’ll post the final product when it is done. What ideas do you have for zines? Do you have examples of zines that you’ve made that you can share? If so, please post below in the examples.

Simple Book from One Page of Paper

Choose a page of paper: At least 8.5″ x 11″. Any size rectangle. Paper should have some firmness. But for a first try using standard office paper is okay. 1 – Fold the paper lengthwise and open 2 – Fold the paper horizontally then again resulting in 4 quadrants 3 – Cut along the longest center fold thru the center 2 quadrants 4 – Pull the fold perpendicular to the sliced section and on either side of the slice up and out. This will give you a star shaped view from the top 5 – Flatten folding into a book…. Read more »
