Makey Makey Circuits

Makey Makey is an electronic invention kit that lets users connect everyday objects to computer programs. Using a circuit board, alligator clips, and a USB cable, the system uses closed loop electrical signals to send the computer either a keyboard stroke or mouse click signal. This function allows the Makey Makey to work with any computer program or web page that take input. In this example, students will work together to make a human presentation slider using a Makey Makey. (Image courtesy of Amber Case)

Create interactives with Scratch

Create interactive stories, games, and animations — and share with others in the online community. (You can also remix others’ work.) Scratch helps people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. It’s also a great way to get into coding. It is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab and is free.

Making Pinhole Cameras to Teach Photo Composition

Pinhole cameras are fun and easy to make and allow the opportunity to slow down and practice photography composition skills. The simple cameras are made out of mostly recycled materials and take stunning, unique black and white photographs. Visit my blog to view or download the how-to and read a lesson plan for how the cameras can be used to teach photography composition in a yearbook, photography, or media class. https://briannaenglish.wordpress.com/maker-education-movement/lesson-using-a-pinhole-camera-to-teach-photography-composition-skills/

Making Paper Circuits

Paper circuits are a way to add light to drawings or other paper creations. These circuits are created by attaching a battery to LED lights with a variety of conductive materials, such as conductive tape or paint. More advanced projects can involve switches, parallel circuits, pressure sensors, and more. Creating paper circuits can teach not only the basics of electronic circuitry, but also about design, iteration, troubleshooting, collaboration, creative expression, and more. Here are some additional sources of information on this topic: Paper circuits from the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium Simple Paper Circuit from Make Hack Your Notebook Day More… Read more »

Learning Grammar with Little Bits

This lesson/how-to for teachers is designed to teach sentence clauses to middle schoolers: http://joiemarinaro.wordpress.com/maker-journals-and-final-product/ It requires a little bit of pre-teaching regarding subjects and predicates, and runons and fragments, but there’s a prezi linked to the How-to. This lesson uses Little Bits to make circuits, which light up, in order to symbolize the properties of independent and dependent clauses. The lesson expressly illustrates the mobility of dependent clauses in a sentence.
