Turn Text into Music

Did you ever wonder what a poem sounds like? This Make idea is all about taking text (your own, or maybe someone else’s) and turning those words into music. The P22 Music Text Composition Converter does the hard work for you, but you still have some choices — instrument voice, beats per minute, etc. How might you take this text-music idea a step further? Why not use the text-music download (it is a MIDI file, so you might have to do more conversion to MP3 via a site like Zamzar) as a soundtrack to something that goes deeper with the text?… Read more »

Mister Rogers Remix

This remix project from PBS Studies continues its work around remixing the Mr. Rogers archives with modern beats and rhythms. Now, the maker of the remix is you. Using the sound clips provided by PBS (or maybe, use a few of your own), you create a new soundtrack for the Mister Rogers Remix: Music. (See video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdAZ79AhcfY&feature=youtu.be) The remixing effort will create a bank of new songs for the original remix video. You’re remixing the remix. If you want to go one step further, try using the Mozilla Popcorn Maker video tool, and mix your soundtrack with the YouTube video…. Read more »

Making Music

Having agency over a digital project includes the music soundtrack and Soundation is one of a number of free tools that allow you to make your own loop mixes in a multi-track environment. The site is set up to “feel” like Garageband and other software music programs. You have a bank of loops that you can choose from (there is a free and a premium service, and the paid service gives you more choices) that you drag into the editor. You can mix and engineer the songs, and if you have account, you can then share or download the song… Read more »

Where I’m From poem

This is the first homework assignment in my multimedia class. It introduces me to the students and gets them quickly into the kind of work they’ll do for their first project. I love the way it marries creative writing and technology. Write a poem in the style of George Ella Lyon’s “Where I’m From”. Record the poem. Optionally, add a music soundtrack. Post your recording on SoundCloud. Optionally, add an image to the SoundCloud post. Share the SoundCloud posting. For details, resources and an example, click the “Adapted from” link. Music in My Mind

This Thimble remake is about understanding and interpreting words, especially lyrics or poetry that stick in your mind, explaining the connection to one’s life; creating a six word title to an image that connects life to lyrics.
